About Us

Our history

Murray State University was founded as a normal school in 1922; the first class in 1926 had 12 graduates. It became a general college in 1948 and a state university in 1966.

The Alpha Sigma Phi Colony at Murray State was developed by Todd Harris, UCLA ‘92, with an initial pledging of eight men on November 23, 1993. The interest group was announced on April 19, 1994. The group received Alpha Sigma Phi National recognition on January 29, 1994. Soon after that Murray State's InterFraternity Council recognized the colony on January 31, 1994 and it grew to 43 members. Officers of the interest group were -- Michael Crisp, President; Jason Barnett, Vice President; Monti Collins, Treasurer; Ben Johnson, Secretary; Bob Hayes, Corresponding Secretary and Sgt. at Arms; Charlie Wright, Editor; Jody Yonts, Marshal.

The Chapter chartered on October 8, 1994 with Paul Radke and Mike Young as Co-Grand Chapter Advisors. Mike Young, Murray State ‘94, has served as a Grand Councilor from 2000-08 in addition to holding multiple volunteer roles with the Delta Tau Chapter, including Grand Chapter Advisor. Jason Nolen-Doerr, Murray State ’05, served on Fraternity Staff, the Grand Council as Grand Marshal (2018-20, 2022-Present) and Grand Junior President (2020-2022). Carlton Matthews, Murray State ’10, contributed on Fraternity Staff from 2014-16 and served as the Grand Chapter Advisor for the Theta Nu Chapter at the University of Missouri - St. Louis from 2016-18. Other Delta Tau brothers that have served on Fraternity Staff include: Robert Blaisdell, Kip Roberts, Josh Waggoner, Jeremey Rodgers, and Kade Gambill.

Delta Tau received Alpha Sigma Phi's Most Improved Chapter award in 1998 and Murray State University’s 2004 Greek Award of Excellence. The chapter is a ten-time Grand Senior President’s Cup winning chapter (2000, 2002, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2019,2020,2021,2022,2023), which is awarded to the top chapter in the nation. Delta Tau has received this award more than any other chapter in the history of Alpha Sigma Phi.

National Alpha Sigma Phi Individual Awards

Delta Beta Xi

This award is for sustained alumni service to the Fraternity. General criteria include years of service, type of service, and significant achievements. To be inducted as part of a class, a brother must receive at least 2/3 of the points possible and must be in the top ten among all the nominees for that particular year.

In 1938, the special award of Delta Beta Xi was created by the Grand Council to honor those men who have given outstanding service to the Fraternity; one hundred brothers were selected when the award was created. In each subsequent year, up to ten men may be selected to receive the Delta Beta Xi Award.

This unusual and single honor recalls the period from 1864 to 1875 when members of Delta Beta Xi secretly pledged their allegiance to Alpha Sigma Phi. Their courage kept the traditions of the Fraternity alive despite a faculty ban on the organization.
